I love homemade coffee Creamer

Making my own creamer recipe has become one of my favorite weekly tasks around the homestead. We source our milk from a local farm.  When you get raw milk, you’re really getting 2 ingredients – heavy cream and milk.  While it’s not necessary to skim your milk, I like to do so because it gives us plenty of cream to make butter and coffee creamer.  Making my own coffee creamer is a super easy way to reduce unnecessary junk from our diet.

I use just 4 Simple ingredients

My base recipe for coffee creamer is equal parts cream, sugar, and milk.  I frequently like to change things up, especially when I’m working in the kitchen.  Although there are many different flavors you could use, this recipe uses a generous amount of organic cocoa powder for a rich, chocolate flavor.  I also use a slightly higher cream to milk ratio for this recipe.  Using slightly more cream means that the final result is a delightfully indulgent addition to your favorite coffee.

For this homemade chocolate coffee creamer, you need approximately 2 cups each heavy cream and sugar, 1-1.5 cups of skimmed milk, and about 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder.  That’s it!

Tools you may need for this recipe

Not only is this homemade, all natural, rich chocolate coffee creamer easy to make, it also requires very few kitchen tools. I’ve found it easiest to pre measure all my ingredients (except for the milk) prior to starting the cooking process. I love using wide mouth pint mason jars as measuring cups. These adorable 4oz mason jars are the perfect container to hold a few tablespoons of cocoa powder.

I use a silicone spatula and milk frother to ensure my ingredients are well mixed. I also love to use a 1.75qt enamel cast iron saucepan – similar to this one – as it’s the perfect size for this recipe.

How to Make This Homemade Coffee Creamer Recipe

First, pour cream into the saucepan and set heat to medium-low. Next, add cocoa powder. Use your milk frother to mix cocoa powder and cream together.

There will still be some clumps of cocoa powder after mixing with the milk frother.  A few quick pulses with an immersion blender is a great way to better incorporate the cocoa powder and cream, but this isn’t necessary.  Once the cocoa powder has been well mixed in, add sugar to the saucepan.

Stir well using your silicone spatula.

Once the sugar has dissolved, continue to stir at regular intervals until contents become somewhat frothy and just begin to simmer. Turn off heat and add milk.

Mix well with the silicone spatula, then transfer to a storage container, refrigerate.  Be sure to give it a good shake before adding to your coffee.  Use within 7-10 days.

Optional Additions or Substitutions

One of the perks of making your own coffee creamers is that you can make adjustments to meet your preferences.  I’ve made a variety of my own flavored creamers.  I love to have a wide variety of options for my flavored creamers which is why I often keep different extracts on hand.  How much extract to use is up to you.  I usually use a teaspoon or two, but depending on your personal preference, you might want less or more.  Don’t be afraid to experiment!

Want a peppermint chocolate creamer?  Just add a dash of peppermint extract to this recipe.

For a peppermint mocha creamer – add a dash of peppermint extract and some espresso powder.

How about chocolate almond?  Just add almond extract.  You could also use almond milk in place of skim milk.

Looking for an extra creamy creamer? Use whole milk or extra heavy cream instead of skim milk.

Looking for a lower dairy content creamer?  Use extra creamy oat milk.

Sometimes, I add a touch of vanilla extract to this recipe just to elevate the flavor combo.

Sugar-Free / Keto Friendly Alternative

Looking for a sugar-free option?  I’ve tried a number of different sugar substitutes and my favorite by far is erythritol.  Erythritol is about 70% as sweet as sugar, so if you choose to substitute erythritol for sugar, you may want to use a bit more than this homemade creamer recipe calls for.  I do not recommend using stevia as it leaves a bad aftertaste when paired with coffee.

Ways to Enjoy Your Homemade Coffee Creamer
